Case Studies: Assigning Online Homework & Quizzes

Theresa Evans, Odessa College (TX)

Course Set-up

Students are placed in their course based on various factors (high school math, ACT, etc) as well as their willingness and interest in taking a math course without a traditional lecture format.

Students are placed in Math 0375 according to their THEA/Compass test scores. Students not testing high enough for Math 0375 are placed in Math 0372 or Math 0371. The syllabus and course information can be found at http://www.odessa.edu/dept/math/tevans/index.htm. Our courses are lecture courses where the students attend class regularly for lecture and complete all homework using MyMathLab. We have an attendance policy and a lab requirement. Students are required to attend the tutoring lab for 1 hour a week. There they work on their homework assignments for their course with the help of a tutor if needed.

How is MyMathLab used?

At Odessa College, we use MyMathLab in our lecture developmental courses and in all our online courses. In lecture courses, we use it to assign homework and quizzes. Our online courses are taught exclusively using MyMathLab.

Student results using MyMathLab

During the Fall 2005 semester, I had one class that did their homework using MyMathLab and one class that did their homework using only the text. The ABC results were:

So far, it seems that our students who choose the MyMathLab option comprehend the material better than the students who do the textbook homework.

I think that the MyMathLab students succeed because they get immediate feedback and they are able to rework the problems as many times as they want. The ability to rework problems is the key to their success. Being able to do this reinforces the process for the students. Students need immediate feedback, and MyMathLab gives it to them.
